NP-F: The Cheaper Camera Battery Solution
Internal first-party batteries sometimes just don’t cut it with their small size and even smaller capacity. You don’t need to purchase the most expensive batteries to power your camera rigs externally, as most batteries are the same with only minor differences. In today’s video, Ando Talks discusses an alternative method for powering your cine rig on a budget using NP-F batteries and an inexpensive battery plate. V-mount batteries may be overkill for your general use case, especially for many amateurs.

Make Any Vintage Camcorder Tapeless for Under 30$
u good!!
thank you for making this video! i have long lamented the fact that V-mount seems to be the first and only thing that every 'high profile' youtuber suggests. despite the fact that NPF works just fine. especially with all the various NPF mounts out there. i got 3 different ones. and they all work very well.
What battery did you use? I tried a barebones build today and i used a USBc power supply but I don't think it was powerful enough.
You need to make sure your usb power supply can provide enough voltage and amperage for the raspi. Which is a minimum output of 5V at 3A (amperes).
@ I tried 2 different power banks that could supply enough power but they didn't work
you can just order 3d printed parts of pcbway or a local print farm or your university
The theme of the video was 'off the shelf,' so I avoided that route to both keep costs lower and push the theme of the video to maintain a small scope.
@YogertPC I understand your point, it's really convenient like that, lego seems more expensive than a printed part from a service, a printed part will really elevate the camera in my opinion, honestly it's almost like an off the shelf part if you recieve it printed
So awesome!
What a gem this channel is! Love the DIY approach to common (and not so common) problems. Powering devices is, like you mentioned, basically a bunch of lithium cells with a BMS. Making them by yourself is doable, but much safer next best thing is to use already existing ones. Thanks for making me aware of another highly re-usable battery system!
It nice but not looking for. Thanks the video plug and play methods but it your way preferred way to go to. It would be nice old ways. Calm
Thanks
SUPER COOL MATE!!!!
And audio quality? Seems to be a bit poor...
My zoom H2 was giving me problems that day
@YogertPC I mean that this recorder works with 8 khz or something like that. Too low quality.
I thought you meant the actual video. lol but the 8khz audio is awful for recording but the picture looks pretty nice
I had a Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera and sold it because the Super 16 mm Sensor made going Super Wide Problematic. Can CinePi handle Full Frame 35mm or even a Super 35mm Sensor? I do have some C mount lenses but I also have a collection of old Canon 35mm Film Lenses. I love the Full Frame 35mmm Sony Sensor and its penchant for collecting plenty of light. Im still using a first Gen Sony A7 , it would be nice to be able to capture 4K RAW from that old beast that still works fine. TBH I’d even be willing to use an outboard recorder if I could get 4K out of that sensor using that
"So, CinePi doesn't quite support an APS-C or 35mm sensor yet. It is possible, but currently, the largest supported sensors are 1-inch and M4/3. Who knows what we'll see in the future! You can join the Discord to keep up with the progress. Also I do belive with cinemate clean hdmi is possible at 4k using a pi 5" -Ando
@ my bad, perhaps I wasn’t being clear. I meant using something like an Atomos Samurai Capture system to get 4K footage from my ancient Sony A7
@Madmohawkfilms I belive it's possible, once again I'd check with the discord about that. but if you were specifically only talking about your A7 and not a Cinepi, I don’t think you’ll be able to unless the camera is actually capable of outputting 4K.
damm the title
I'm so into this project, but i don't know if i need a camera or the seretonin from the build 😛
that camera is so janke i think in comes all the way back around to brilliant good job
Everytime i try and record footage from my camcorder it shows up with a black screen. If i adjust it a little out it gets really distorted but still shows the picture. The output works fine its just the input.
I've had similar issues with these devices. Sometimes it's bad solder joints. If you are confident enough, you could open it up and see if anything is not properly soldered in.
Maybe you can help me figure out an issue. I am currently trying to download the image but I am working on a Mac. The issue I am having is actually. getting the image. DO you know a work around?
I would check out the Cinepi discord in the description, someone there will be able to help you more easily. Hope this helps.
I don't like Windows myself but I agree as of right now it's for games it's where you have to be for the most part it's getting better with steam OS but it's not there yet oh I'll give it a couple years
Honestly, Linux Mint with Cinnamon has gotten pretty GOATed. If you aren't concerned with playing every single game out there and only Steam games without specific anti-cheat, it is a better experience than Windows 11. Which oddly enough, has been breaking a lot for me recently.
@YogertPC thank you for the information. I ran across your channel it seems pretty interesting I subscribed and I'll watch more of your videos when I got more time keep up the good work the first video I watched was the I think the recent one with the small monitors portable. I think the small monitors are really cool. I know it's kind of expensive but I want to pick up a OLED 16 in portable sometime
love your enthusiasm man
I was literally about to say "I'm gonna buy 10 and set them up as a grid." And then you said not to steal your idea, so won't.
Nah you can have that one, thats also a solid plan
This is so cool!
I'm not a tech person, so I appreciate the knowledge. I also have Crab Rave playing in my head So double thanks.
It's already obsolete, not even being 4K, though.
The pi 5 supports 4K, and the 2GB model only costs 50$, which is cheaper than the 8GB pi 4.
@@YogertPC Thank you for the correction.
I have the same dbrand case and skin on my steam deck lol
Twinning!
I like the new profile pic!
You should try out the Fujian 35mm f1.7 lens
16x10 sounded icky, then it all made sense.

Aaaaaahhhh Thanks for this!!!!!❤❤❤
Thank you for watching
That's good but the best way to capture analogue video is by using the Atomos Ninjja V with a Svideo/to HDMI converter.
Yes it is but, that’s expensive.
Thank you for sharing this video with the community. Would love to see a step guide for the V2 variant. Excited to see whats to come. also, is there a simple way to add a stop start record button directly to the pi?
Thank you so much I really appreciate that. The build guide on the git hub has a way to do it but, because of the touch display using all of the GPIO pins it’s not the easiest thing to setup. However Cinemate the other cinepi distribution I found out actually supports using a phone as a monitor so I that should be as simple as putting a button on the appropriate gpio and be ready to go. Video on that coming soon
What if I told you to change the way a RUclipsr loser uses his name is beast, I never saw a video of his,
What?
Wondering if anyone has used it with the rasbery pi global shutter sensor and what is your experience... If so it would be one of the first high res global shutter, affordable camera rig in years... I got a pi 5 just to experiment and do this.
I believe some people have done it with the global shutter. There were talks of it a year or two ago, but I would ask on the Discord.
@@YogertPC cool i'll have a look, its really daunting looking for a global shutter camera. there are proper cameras but at the cheap end at £350 but its 960x540 upscaled (panasonic hmc150) and other cameras are £500 plus but blackmagic seems to hate that camera by not supporting it even when it was new. anyway thank you for your work
It is not popular because cameras are affordable on a second hand market. The problem with diy approach is that it is to time consuming and simply inefficient from financial standpoint.
For now . That’s why we support this kind of stuff so it gets cheaper, more common, and ,easier to build. The Cinepi community grows each day. The concept of the Frame work laptops don’t make sense until framework makes the thing.
@Andoonline Unfortunately the concept of upgradability in tech proved to be faulty. Remember modular phones, laptops... All failed. There simply is no sense in diy approach with the state of modern automation and production process. What is the point of building a camera from Lego or printing it on a 3d printer if I can get a used black magic camera on eBay, use it for filming projects and sell it back. It's not like the price of the unit, it is the value. There are some green washing sustainability projects like fair phone... But yeah... We all are using iPhones pixels and Samsung at the end. The same is with laptops and cars and other stuff. Diy approach is valid for the things that are custom and cannot be provided by the means of mass production. Cameras are general products that are widely available on the market. Custom clothes, shoes, and furniture will be popular. It's not like I am against custom cameras, but the idea is flawed and will be appreciated only by diy enthusiasts. A great example is a simple and inexpensive object as a nail. If you need a special nail with special length and special custom diameter and head it will be highly expensive to produce one nail like that. Just imagine hand-forging one nail. On the other hand you can go to any construction shop and buy a bag of fine nails for next to nothing.
Modular laptops didn't fail, one just had not succeeded yet for example, Framework laptops are doing perfectly fine as a product. no its not for everyone but there is clearly a market for it. Also there is however a market for cameras that can be destroyed easily and have good image quality and visual fidelity without destroying a camera that someone actually cares about, and is cheaper than a red Komodo which was also intended for that use case, because when it comes to image quality a go-pro just doesn't cut it. so when 3d chassis you can purchase come... which I know for a fact are coming there could be a larger market for a do it yourself kit... or barbones or even a completed camera. The apple one wasn't sold as a PC it was sold as a kit... which maybe didn't lead to everyone building an apple 1 but it did lead to the apple 2 which was user upgradeable and, created a highly successful easily serviceable Eco system. Also building a camera with off the shelf parts that they themselves are already products that people buy many of is not the same as taking steel and melting it down into a nail that requires lots of equipment. When building on this platform can be as simple as a buying the case and throwing the parts into it or cutting up a cigar box and mounting them.
@@YogertPC As I said before: I am not against it. I do not see modular laptops in industries. There is simply another duopoly with Thinkpad and Macbook. Nails are not a good example, I see. Nails do not become obsolete as computers. A good example is when I built my girlfriend's PC 5 years ago. It was built with the intention of being upgradable. But after 5 years the only part that was upgraded is adding another m.2 SSD and even it cannot work with designed speed due to the age of the main bus. So any desirable upgrade requires replacing the motherboard and case and power supply. So basically it is not upgradable. It is easier to sell it and build another one. Due to the socket, ram and SSD improvements in recent years it is near obsolete, even if the case and power supply is not enough. Raspberry pi has its limitations, especially the whole camera connection port is designed more for security cameras purposes. Plus the raspberry is now almost $100. Chinese action cams provide better value. Even using a GoPro makes more sense. For 200 bucks it is possible to get a camera phone, even cheaper... Something like pixel 6 pro or Sony Experia something. I want to see the ready product to compare the value with other options.
What adapter do you need to buy
a.co/d/5yddCWO
I got one for free knowing it was fake and it turns out it’s a Tesla P4, so I’m trying to flash it with the correct bios but NVflash won’t let me do it, it won’t even let me turn off write protection
I have a similar issue with mine, I don’t have the proper tools to flash the BIOS, so it will live out its like as a janky fake card
@ did you try to flash it? And if so did you try using an old version of NVflash? Apparently if you use a really old or modified version it can detect fake cards but the newest version cannot
Hey! I got one of these, and the cables it came with are headphone jack with nothing attached. I bought av to composite cables and those don't seem to work either- could you explain what adapters you ended up using?
www.amazon.com/dp/B08NV48MHP?ref=cm_sw_r_cso_cp_apin_dp_3F3FZHAZJAKEPTRVWR9C&ref_=cm_sw_r_cso_cp_apin_dp_3F3FZHAZJAKEPTRVWR9C&social_share=cm_sw_r_cso_cp_apin_dp_3F3FZHAZJAKEPTRVWR9C&starsLeft=1&skipTwisterOG=1&titleSource=avft-a&newOGT=1 here try this one the issue that I had was that the pole of the 3.5 mm jack is in different spots on different adapters and it’s very inconsistent. This one is the one I bought and it works.
what about raspi 5 16GB ? can it also work ?
It should but, there is no reason to buy a pi 5 16gb for this project when with a decent-ish SSD even 8gb doesn’t saturate the buffer. Honestly save the money and, go with 8 or 4 or 2gb for 50$. If you aren’t compiling the software yourself and can find precompiled software specific to the pi 5. But cinepi v2 is specifically for the pi 4 b so I reccomend cinefox for any pi 5 shenanigans.
@@YogertPC The one case where 16 GB might be helpful is if you're recording short high speed clips, you can cram more stuff in the 16 GB RAM really quickly, so your buffer would be better there.. that's probably a higher end use case, but one way to justify spending so much on a Pi haha
@Level2Jeff according to School Post at 300 MB ish a second you can actually still record some in some pretty high frame rates so a fast SSD is gonna be the most important factor still. However the 16GB will allow for the extra oompf for doing it at even higher resolutions so I’m quite excited for what he figures out with it too.
@@YogertPC Yeah, I'm just excited that with the Pi 5, it looks like it unlocks a few nice things like 4K at 30 (easily) and maybe even 60 with some hacks... and even higher framerates for high speed use! I'm hopefully going to build one of these soon.
woot woot! congrats on the subs. great tips! nice vid!
Can I do the same with a Rpi5 and an IMX585? I see what the Cinepi guys are doing but it seems like a higher technical level than I'm accustomed to. The devils always in the details
It is quite a bit harder, but at some point there will be a pi 5 image to use according to school post on the cinepi discord. it’s just a matter of when
@YogertPC schoolposts imx585 videos look so damn good!
@@remebondI know right it’s insane who knows maybe a 35mm sensor is in our future or idk perhaps even the same sensor in the pocket 4K

switched back to windows because I don't want another part time job. I've been a fedora user for about a year and it was working really well up until I switched laptops and got one with an nvidia gpu and a higher resolution laptop screen. DPI became a primary issue with games that used proton where everything would be too small. tried changing my session to x11 which fixed it but gave me more issues, I went through many different forums, talked to some people in the linux discord, and checked the internet and havent found any fix. Huge fan of what linux is doing and how far they've come, all I hope for is that support gets better as more people switch to it.
